One of the primary concerns for users is whether Plex can play MKV files directly without any additional steps. The answer to this question is generally yes; Plex can handle MKV files natively. However, there are a few caveats to keep in mind.
What Video Codecs are Compatible with Plex?
While Plex supports MKV files, the codec used within the MKV container also plays a significant role in playback capabilities. Here are some commonly used codecs that Plex can handle:
- H.264
- H.265 (HEVC)
- VP9
- MP3
- AAC
- DTS
It’s important to ensure that the video and audio codecs used in your MKV files are compatible with Plex, as unsupported codecs may lead to playback issues.
